First, you will view the film: The Codes of Gender: Identity and Performance in Popular culture by Sut Jhally. The film is available on Sakai under Course Readings. Two versions will be available for viewing: a full version and an abridged version. The abridged version (46 minutes) is recommended.  1. Do you think gender codes in advertising and other media have any real effect on how you see/understand/interact with other people? If so, in what ways? If not, why not? 

2. Do you think the gender codes in advertising and other media affect how other people see/understand/interact with you? If so, in what ways? If not, why not?

 3. Do you think there may be other codes such as ‘race’ or class codes that may affect how you see/understand/interact with other people and how they may see/understand/interact with you? 

4. How has the sociological perspective helped you to understand or possibly rethink these gender codes, and other possible codes, found in advertising and other media?
