Ah, the philosophers of the ancient world. I think most of us are at least somewhat familiar with the Ancient Greek ones, even prior to this course (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, etc), but with this chapter we have now been introduced to new ways of thought in this Axial Age. As the title of the chapter suggests, the world was indeed turned inside out in Greece, China, India, Persia and beyond, through the writings and teachings of these extraordinary individuals.
Chapter five in the document reader contains selections from a handful of the thinkers of this extraordinary age. Read through them again, and talk about any similarities or differences you can find among them. What do you think accounts for these similarities or differences? Do you think any of their ideas were truly radical in nature, for their time or even for ours? Why or why not? Do you have a “favorite” among them?
