Present Tense Conjugation of Tener and Venir in Spanish

Tener and venir are two examples of irregular verbs. Although they do not follow the regular rules for conjugation, they have their own unique pattern of conjugation. In this lesson we will look at the present tense conjugations of both tener and venir.
Regular vs. Irregular Verbs
Hablar, comer, vivir. I’m sure if I asked you to, you would have no problem conjugating these three verbs. That’s because these are regular verbs. All regular -ar, -er, and -ir verbs follow the same rules for conjugation.
We know that to conjugate regular verbs, we drop the -ar, -er or -ir and add in the appropriate endings.
hablar comer vivir
yo hablo como vivo
tú hablas comes vives
él, ella, Ud. habla come vive
nosotros hablamos comemos vivimos
vosotros habláis coméis vivís
ellos, ellas, Uds. hablan comen viven
Irregular verbs are verbs that do not follow the standard rules of conjugation.
Tener (to have) and venir (to come) are two irregular verbs, but they do share a common pattern of conjugation.
Conjugation of Tener
First listen to Mara talking about her family. Try and listen for the different conjugations of the verb tener, to have. After we will fill in the conjugation chart.
Hola, soy Mara. !Yo tengo una familia muy grande! Mis padres tienen cinco hijos. Yo tengo un hermano y tengo 3 hermanas. Mi hermano es mayor. Él tiene su propio coche. Mis hermanas no tienen coche, pero ellas tienen mucha ropa. Nosotros también tenemos un perro, dos gatos y un pez. Tenemos una casa muy grande porque somos muchos los que vivimos allí. ?Y tú? ?Tienes una familia grande?
Tener
yo nosotros
tú (vosotros)
él, ella, Ud. ellos, ellas Uds.
Now we will go through the chart and fill in the different conjugations. See if you can remember which conjugation was used with each pronoun.
?Yo? Tengo. Mara said, ‘Yo tengo una familia grande.’
?Tú? Tienes. At the end, Mara asked you, ‘?Y tú? ?Tienes una familia grande?’
?Él, ella, Ud.? Tiene. Here, Mara spoke about her brother and said he has his own car. ‘Él tiene su propio coche.’
?Nosotros? Tenemos. Here we have two examples. She said ‘Nosotros también tenemos un perro, dos gatos y un pez.’ And, ‘Tenemos una casa grande.’
Vosotros wasn’t mentioned, but can you guess how it would be conjugated? Tenéis. Remember, vosotros is used in Spain for the plural ‘you’.
?Ellos, ellas, Uds.? Tienen. ‘Mis padres tienen cinco hijos’. Mara also said her sisters have a lot of clothes. ‘Ellas tienen mucha ropa.’

Mi abuela viene también. Ella viene de Boston. Mi hermano viene tarde, él viene en su propio coche. Yo vengo con mis padres y hermanas. ?Y tú? ?Dónde estás? ?Tú no vienes a la fiesta?
