Getting Started
Process recordings are detailed, written accounts of professional interactions that you have with clients (individuals, families, and groups), group participants, or stakeholders. Key elements of the recordings are a transcription of the interactive dialogue and any important nonverbal behaviors or cues, identification of the competencies you demonstrated in the interaction (or are working on developing), your self-reflection about the interaction, and your thoughts and feelings about the interaction. This process recording, based on evidence regarding the integration of theory in practice, includes four steps or stages in the integration process: retrieval and recall, reflection and examination of reactions, linkage of subjective reaction with objective facts, and formulation of professional response based on the analysis.

Background Information
Process recordings provide a unique opportunity to reflect on your current skills, knowledge, and values, and opportunities to utilize additional skills in the future, as well as consider the alignment of specific skills and theoretical approaches with the needs and goals of individual clients or client groups. Foundation year students are required to create at least two individual and/or group process recordings per field seminar. Students in the earlier phase of their practicum, when they may not be providing direct assessment or intervention, may complete their process recordings based on observation or co-therapy assignments working with other professionals. Work with your field practicum supervisor and/or faculty liaison to clarify the interactions for which you should complete your process recordings. Consult with your field instructor before and after completing each process recording. Process recordings will be used as a foundation for discussion in online cohort meetings.

In this workshop and moving forward, be particularly mindful of specific communication skills. (Refer to Table 5.1 in Chapter 5 of your text, The Social Work Practicum: A Guide and Workbook for Students, for specific skills.)
