How to Get a GED in Texas
Check Your Eligibility
You must be a resident of Texas in order to sit for the GED exam in this state. You will need to prove your eligibility by supplying a photo ID and proof of residence, which can include a statement from your bank, your driver’s license or a bill.
Generally, Texas offers the GED test to individuals at least 18 years of age or older who have not completed high school and are not currently enrolled.
Sixteen-year-olds can take the GED if they are being cared for by the state. They are also eligible if they are receiving training through the Job Corps or the Texas Challenge Academy. Finally, certain court orders may allow 16-year-olds to complete the GED.
Seventeen-year-olds have the same options as above. Additionally, they may take the GED if they have permission from their parent or guardian and are not currently enrolled in high school.
Get Registered
You can register for the GED through the GED Testing Service website (www.ged.com). You’ll need to set up an account and select when and where you’d like to take your assessment. Keep in mind that you can take all four GED exams at once or complete them on different days. It’s up to you.
Study for the Test
The best way to make sure you pass the GED is to study before test day. You can purchase a study guide through many bookstores and retailers; your local library might have copies as well. Look for a book that covers all four portions of the test and offers practice questions. The GED Testing Service also offers a free practice test that you can complete.
You can also study online with Study.com’s GED Study Guide. This course goes over what you need to know to successfully pass the language arts, mathematics, social studies and science portions of the exam. It includes interactive quizzes that can track your course progress and a final exam to gauge your readiness for the actual GED test. You’ll also get the chance to contact expert instructors with any questions you have.
Earn a Passing Score
The minimum passing score for the GED was recently lowered. You’ll now be required to score 145 on each of the GED subject tests in order to pass and earn your high school equivalency certificate.
Receive Your Certificate
You can check your scores within three hours of completing your exams on the GED Testing Service website. You’ll need to log in to your account to get this information.
Your initial certificate should be emailed to you automatically within around five days of passing all of your subject tests. If you need to access a verification letter that you passed the GED, you will need to use the GED Certificate Search available on the Texas Education Agency’s website (www.tea.texas.gov). You can also purchase an official, printable certificate of high school equivalency from this agency.
If, for some reason, your testing records are not appearing, you can contact the agency by email to submit a request for your certificate or verification letter.
