Accuplacer Test Score Information

Score Information for Accuplacer Tests
Accuplacer tests are given to determine if a person is ready to take college-level classes in key subject areas. The Accuplacer Math, Reading, and Writing tests each receive a score between 200 and 300. The Accuplacer ESL tests have a score range of 20 to 120. The WritePlacer Essay test is scored from 1 to 8, and the WritePlacer ESL is scored from 1 to 6.
Students’ scores may determine if they have to take preparation courses first, which do not count for college credit. Scores may also affect which college-level classes they have the option of taking. Each college or university sets its own score requirements, so it is important for individuals to familiarize themselves with the test scores needed to take specific courses at the school they plan to attend.
Mathematics Scores
At schools using the Accuplacer Math tests, scores of around 230 or 253 might be required on a Math test to take college-level math courses. Many schools will place you in an appropriately leveled math class based on your scores.
There are three Accuplacer Math tests- Arithmetic, Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF) and Quantitative Reasoning and Statistics (QAS). Be sure to consult your school in order to choose the appropriate Math test that covers the material relevant to the courses you wish to take (ie. if you wish to take algebra or calculus you may need the AAF test rather than the QAS test).
Reading Scores
Some schools expect students who do not earn 209 or more points on the Reading test to take a reading course that does not qualify for college credits but does prepare them to read at a college level. Higher scores are usually used to assign students to appropriate courses. Some schools will accept a Reading score of 250 or higher as testing out of a basic college reading requirement.
Writing Scores
Some schools use the Write Placer and ESL Writing tests to determine if individuals are ready for English composition classes. The higher the score, the better an individual did on the test. Individuals may need to earn at least 5 points on the WritePlacer to qualify for college-level English classes.
Other schools use the Writing test. Score requirements for college-level writing classes can range from around 250 to 280 points.
Receiving Test Scores
The computerized testing system used for the Accuplacer exams enables individuals to get their test scores right away. After a person completes an exam they will be able to get their score report from the school where they took the test.
Once they get their test scores, students might receive guidance from school counselors. These professionals can review test results and advise students to retake the test, take a diagnostic version of the exam or enroll in preparation courses in one or more subject areas. Counselors can also identify the college-level classes student are eligible to take if they did well and help them choose the best courses for their first year of studies.
Accuplacer Study Materials
Because Accuplacer scores can determine whether you will start with preparation classes or college-level courses, it’s important to do as well as possible on these exams. The higher your Accuplacer score, the more course options you will have, and you will not have to spend extra time and money taking preparation classes.
Using these study courses is a good way to prepare for the Accuplacer tests you are taking. They were constructed specifically for each test and take you through all of the material you will be tested on. You can work on lessons when it suits your schedule and access the materials online.
