What are some key success factors for Nurse Leaders?
It is imperative that nurse leaderâ€s have the ability to stand out among other high performers, and that they possess the ability to committing to aligning themselves with the organizationâ€s mission as well as their own personal objectives (Dunham-Taylor & Pinczuk, 2015). Too many leaders are full of excuses as to why something has not been done in a timely manner. Also, when possible, a successful leader should try to under commit and over deliver. It is important to be the leader others look up to and want to emulate. In order for leaders in todayâ€s healthcare environment to excel in their career, it is critical for them to develop a coaching mindset. Staff members highly value managers and leaders who adopt a coaching style of managing performance. These are the type of leaders that others feel they can count on and trust. Always remember to say thank you to your staff and show appreciation for their hard work, as it will build tremendous loyalty and engagement which is crucial to successful leadership.
In order to reach these higher levels of success nurse leaders must possess the ability to overcome some barriers to leadership. Barriers such as recruitment and retention because of budgeting restraints have been unfavorable for nurse leaders but, as stated by Dunham-Taylor & Pinczuk, 2015, for nurse leaders to be effective, they must acquire the steps for budgeting. Understanding budgeting is very important for a nurse leader as he or she can understand what is actually affordable in terms of recruitment and retaining staff, implementing new technology, allowing for training and retraining are all of vital importance to the success of a nurse leader. Retaining nurses will require nurse leaders to consider the wants and needs of a new generation of nurses. They must be aware of and advocate for new innovative technology. Nurse leaders must be prepared to foster a culturally aware patient care team to enhance the human connection, as this is one of the most fundamental aspects of patient care in such a global healthcare environment (Ghiasipour et al., 2017). Promoting self care for nurses is also important for nurse leaders to promote. Encouraging relaxation, deep breathing and exercise and allowing nurseâ€s time to get away from the unit can also enhance self care. If nurse leaders can foster some of these initiatives, then they can reach higher levels of leadership success.

A nurse leader can be defined as a nurse who is able to take on a leadership role in his or her environment. It is important to note that nursing leadership is an extremely important aspect of nursing and it is not only a vital aspect of the nursing practice but also with regards to providing the best possible care to the patients. It has been noted that hospitals and clinics that have effective nurse leaders are able to have better retention rates for the nurses as well as improved patient outcomes. A nurse leader is one who is able to mentor other nurses as well as provide a lot of support to the nursing staff(Ahtisham, 2015). In this regard, we find that a nurse leader is essential in building trust and relationships, creating a work environment that is empowering for the other nurses, creates and environment that supports the knowledge development and integration, is able to provide sustaining change and is able to balance various competing values and priorities.
Nurse leaders are an extremely important aspect of the nursing practice. Nurse leaders are important not just in terms of leading the nurses to better outcomes for the patients, but they have been instrumental in how the nursing practice overall has evolved. To obtain higher level of success it is important for seasoned and new nurses to break free from traditional nursing and strive be innovative nurse leaders who will be remembered in a positive way and who contribution to nursing will be remembered for years to come.
