Introduction
The paper for the course will be based on an interest group and will follow the format as laid out below.

General paper guidelines
Paper MUST be a minimum of 1500 words and should not exceed 2500 words.All papers must be written in a paragraph format, typed double spaced, with one inch margins, a 12 cpi times new roman font, using in-text citations, including page numbers, a title page, and a references page.Each paper will have three sources not counting the text book, encyclopedias and dictionaries do not count as sources.Direct quotes should be kept to a minimum, on average a sentence or two or about four lines per page.Please do not use folders, I only require that they be stapled, papers in folders are difficult to read.More information about the papers will be provided on Canvas and in class in the weeks prior to the papers being due.
No late papers will be accepted.Papers are due at the beginning of class on the date due.PAPERS THAT DO NOT MEET THE 1500 WORDS REQUIREMENT, OR DO NOT HAVE A REFERENCES PAGE WILL NOT RECEIVE A PASSING GRADE.
Paper 2- Interest Group Paper
Students will find a national interest group and describe what the group does, how they do it, and how it affects society.In describing the interest group the student should discuss the groupâ€s goal what is the group trying to achieve.In discussing how the group operates students should give examples of lobbying or mobilization techniques used by the group.Finally, students should discuss whether the group is effective and what is the groupâ€s effect on society as a whole? A few examples of interest groups are: American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), National Rifle Association (NRA), and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
Papers will be turned in at the beginning of the class period on the date due.

The interest group paper is a paper in which each student will find an interest group that lobbies the national government.The paper will describe an interest group, what it does, how it does it, its membership, and its impact on society.A minimum of 3 sources is required for this paper. The paper will be a minimum of 1500; papers which are not a minimum of 1500 words will not receive a passing grade.
Paper Expectations:Section 1. The paper will thoroughly describe a interest group, the description should include a discussion of the goals of the group, including a summary of its charter or mission statement.This section should be roughly 1-2 pages in length.
Section 2. The paper will discuss how the interest group fulfills its goals.The paper should discuss important lobbying techniques or grass roots operations. The discussion of how the group operates should constitute the bulk of the paper roughly 2-3 pages in length.
Section 3. The last section of the paper should focus on the membership of the group and its impact on society.In this section the paper will address whether or not the group is effective or not in fulfilling its goals and whether or not fulfilling its goals is good for society as a whole. Specific examples should be used to define the arguments of the author. This section should be 2 pages in length.

Social movements
Social movements are not interest groups. A social movement is something like Black lives matters, or the metoo movement.These are not interest groups and should not be used for this paper.
Non-profits
Interest groups are non-profits, but not all non-profits are interest groups.Groups like Goodwill or Salvation Army are not good topics for this paper.
Over 40,000 registered interest groups
There are over 40,000 registered interest groups.Students should focus on large controversial interest groups that are in the news frequently.Focusing on a small public interest groups may prove difficult to reach the word requirement for this paper.
Sources:Three sources are required for the paper.The best source for this type of paper is the interest group’s web page and newspaper articles dealing with the interest group.Online sources may be used but they must be from a legitimate governmental agency, interest groups, or media outlet, for example, ABC, NBC, CBS, and Huffington Post.
