The Differences in Hospice and Palliative Care
Providing comfort reduces the pain for people suffering from a terminal illness and are getting closer to the end of life process is important. Hospice and palliative care services are very significant in comforting patients with certain kind of disease/illness to help ease pain and their family members to reduce stress in emotional, physical, and sufferings. Palliative and hospice cares vary based on condition of the patient and other necessities.
Patients who are no longer suitable for curative treatments, those who choose not to undergo certain treatment or stop current treatment, with less than 6 months of life expectancy may decide to go with hospice care (Kinzbrunner & Policzer, 2011, p. 39). On the other hand, palliative care supports the patients suffering from critical illness and their families with human and medical needs while empowering them to live as actively as possible. In addition, while hospice care mainly focuses in relieving pain and sufferings at the end of life stage, palliative care typically concentrates on preventing and treating side effects and symptoms along with offering alternative, multi, and inter-displinary concepts (Casey, 2019, p. 196). While hospice care services are covered by health insurers, Medicaid & Medicare, palliative care services are not normally funded by those entities and depended upon treatment plan and benefits of the patients (Kinzbrunner & Policzer, 2011, p. 46).
In conclusion, promoting the quality of life of seriously ill and dying individuals along with family members, caregivers, and survivors is important. Promoting death with dignity, and fostering hope at the end of life through holistic care is also a very important factor.
