John Dewey, “the father of progressive education,” had a tremendous impact on education in the United States (Mondale & Patton, 2001, p. 76).  In 1900,

most children left school by the end of eighth grade to go to work or help out at home.  The American common school usually offered eight years of instruction.  With its emphasis on the three Rs, its reliance on rote recitations and spelling bees, its close ties to the citizenry, its underpaid teachers and its usually crowded classrooms (Mondale & Patton, 2001, p. 64).

The challenge that John Dewey saw in these schools was “that much of present education fails because it neglects this fundamental principle of the school as a form of community life. It conceives the school as a place where certain information is to be given, where certain lessons are to be learned, or where certain habits are to be formed” (Dewey, 1897).  He was concerned that these “traditional schools” would not prepare students for their present and future life.  Dewey (1938) notes that in traditional schools, “the main purpose or objective is to prepare the young for future responsibilities and for success in life, by means of information and prepared forms of skill which comprehend the material of instruction” (p. 18).  He goes on to argue that “that which is taught is thought of as essentially static.  It is taught as a finished product, with little regard either to the ways in which it was originally built up or to changes that will surely occur in the future” (Dewey, 1938, p. 19).   School was not a dynamic and engaging community environment for students.

Instead of these traditional schools, Dewey envisioned schools where students learn “by doing” (Mondale & Patton, 2001, p. 67).  He “believed that if schools were anchored in the whole child, in the social, intellectual, emotional, and physical development of a child, teaching would be different–and learning would be different and schools would be very different, hospitable places for children” (Mondale & Patton, 2001, p. 77).  Dewey (1897) writes, “I believe that the only true education comes through the stimulation of the child’s powers by the demands of the social situations in which he finds himself. Through these demands he is stimulated to act as a member of a unity, to emerge from his original narrowness of action and feeling, and to conceive of himself from the standpoint of the welfare of the group to which he belongs.”

Moreover, Dewey held that education was not just about their future, but also the present world in which children live. “Thinking and learning, in Dewey’s view, had evolved because they have a vital function–they enable humans to survive by escaping from danger, by foreseeing serious problems before they occur, by enabling foresight and planning and productive activity” (Phillips & Soltis, 2009, p. 38).  Dewey (1897)  cautions that “it is impossible to prepare the child for any precise set of conditions. To prepare him for the future life means to give him command of himself; it means so to train him that he will have the full and ready use of all his capacities.”  As a result, he notes that we must remember that education “is a process of living and not a preparation for future living. I believe that the school must represent present life–life as real and vital to the child as that which he carries on in the home, in the neighborhood, or on the playground. I believe that education which does not occur through forms of life, or that are worth living for their own sake, is always a poor substitute for the genuine reality and tends to cramp and to deaden” (Dewey, 1897).

This approach was a shift in thinking for the American public, but Dewey (1938) also warned that “Where the traditional school relied upon subjects or the cultural heritage for is content, the ‘new’ school has exalted the learner’s impulse and interest and the current problems of a changing society.  Neither of these sets of values is sufficient unto itself.  Both are essential.  Sound education experience involved, above all, continuity and interaction between the learner and what is learned” (p. 9-10).  We cannot forget that elements of both traditional and progressive education are important for students.  In his earlier writing, Dewey (1897), stated, “I believe that the community’s duty to education is, therefore, its paramount moral duty.” He continues, “through education society can formulate its own purposes, can organize its own means and resources, and thus shape itself with definiteness and economy in the direction in which it wishes to move” (Dewey, 1897).  His vision truly changed the face of American education.

  • Dewey’s idea of what schooling should look like was extremely progressive for his time. During Dewey’s time, traditional schools typically consisted of a teacher giving children information and the children were expected to retain this information. Also during this time, children typically didn’t go to school much longer than 8th grade. Dewey’s principal of educative experience were so progressive because he viewed education to be a social experience. He states that school is a social institution and “Education being a social process, the school is simply that form of community life in which all those agencies are concentrated that will be most effective in bringing the child to share in the inherited resources of the race, and to use his own powers for social ends.” This view is very different than what traditional schools were teaching.

John Dewey had a significant influence on education. Some of his beliefs that resonate with my beliefs and the way that I teach include school being a social setting and children will benefit from social experiences. I also found it interesting how he mentioned that traditional schools focus so heavily on preparing children for the future, that we do not teach them how to be in the present, and that is where we fail them.

Dewey believes “education is the fundamental method of social progress and reform…and that education is a regulation of the process of coming to share in the social consciousness”. It also stood out to me that Dewey claims that the role of the teacher is not to simply train individuals, but to help them properly form a social life. How can we prepare these children to successfully enter society? When it comes down to it, that’s really what our goal and focus should be.

I believe that Dewy’s ideas continue to be relevant in education today. While teaching curriculum, I feel that teachers also recognize the importance to help create kind, moral, students who are ready to enter into society successfully. We do this by giving them experiences, activities, and guided social interactions. Last week, I took my kindergarten students to a farm on a field trip. This was such a powerful experience for my students, as many of them have never seen farm animals before. When I read them a story about farm animals, before I read the book, I asked them what kind of animals lived on the farm. I got many answers that included “giraffe, zebra, elephant” and other “zoo” animals. It’s one thing to read a story about farms and to just tell them that those aren’t farm animals. I feel that now that they’ve had that experience, it’s so much more memorable to them and will be something that sticks with them.

According to Dewey, the purpose of education is for individuals to share in the intellectual and moral resources which humanity has succeeded in getting together. (Dewey 1938, pg.1-3) Dewey believed that true education comes through the stimulation of the child’s powers by the demands of social situations in which they find themselves in. According to Dewey, the educational process has 2 sides-one psychological and one sociological. The psychological side is the basis because this is where the child’s own instincts and powers furnish the material and gives them a starting point for all education. And without this understanding into the psychological structure of an individual the education process will be haphazard and arbitrary. Social conditions are necessary to interpret the child’s powers. We need to know and understand the past, present, and future experiences of a child to see how they learn.

Because of his beliefs he disagreed with traditional schools and stated that both “traditional” and “progressive” education had defects. Dewey felt that traditional school relied on subjects or culture heritage for its content. And defined a student’s learning path for them. The “new” school has exalted the learner’s impulse and interest and the current problems of a changing society. (Dewey,1938, pg.9)

Traditional learning was too strict and progressive was too spontaneous so Dewey thought they were both inadequate because neither of them applied the principles of a carefully developed philosophy of experience. (Dewey 1938, pg. 9-10) He stated, “traditional schools impose adult standards, subject matters and methods upon those who are only growing slowly toward maturity. And this is beyond the reach of experience young learners already possess”. (Dewey 1938, pg. 19)

Dewey’s theory is that experience arises from the interaction of two principles — continuity and interaction.  Continuity is that each experience a person has will influence his/her future, for better or for worse.  Interaction refers to the situational influence on one’s experience.  In other words, one’s present experience is a function of the interaction between one’s past experiences and the present situation.  For example, my experience of a lesson, will depend on how the teacher arranges and facilitates the lesson, as well my past experience of similar lessons and teachers.(wilderdom.com)

Today, if a teacher wants to follow the ideas of Dewey the teachers would make school interesting and useful by planning lessons that provoke learning and teaches students how to learn. They would also plan lessons that are engaging and can promote their future experiences.

Diverse Marketplace

Effective Performance in a Diverse Marketplace

4pages

Leaders who participate in international business engagements learn about their strengths and weaknesses and develop critical leadership skills that allow them to understand and appreciate other cultures. Within international business settings, leaders learn from others by sharing ideas and different perspectives necessary to innovatively solve problems and competitively conduct business in the global arena. Understanding diversity enhances a leader’s conflict resolution, listening, interpersonal, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. Globalization has allowed organizations to capitalize on their diverse workforces to seek alternate ways to remain competitive. Organizations that embrace diversity may gain competitive advantages over organizations that do not.

For this week’s assignment, consider how understanding diversity in global settings leads to effective performance.Submit a report that includes responses to the following:

What is cultural diversity and what are some of the challenges associated with it when engaging in international business activities?

What are the potential benefits of cultural diversity? How can multinational companies gain a competitive advantage or a marketing edge by embracing cultural diversity as a major strategic initiative? Use an example to illustrate your point.

Assess the role that international leaders play to ensure that an organization maintains a systematic, ongoing diversity program.

Analyze at least three methods to increase the number of women leaders in international leadership roles.

Influence of Peers

Influence of Peers

The influence of peers during childhood can have a long-lasting effect on a person throughout his or her life. In this assignment, keep in mind at least three different ways in which teachers and/or parents can intervene to help improve a child’s social skills and relationship with peers. It is the adult’s responsibility to enhance a relationship with peers, rather than be the relationship.
Use the information from your text to construct a PowerPoint presentation that provides your suggestions for parents/educators. In addition, give a short explanation of why these suggestions will encourage positive peer relationships. You must use at least two scholarly sources other than the textbook and required readings to support your suggestions.

The PowerPoint presentation must include:

  1. Title slide (one slide)
  2. A description of how and an explanation of why the influence of peers during childhood can have a long-lasting effect on a person throughout his or her life (two slides).
  3. At least six slides summarizing at least three different ways in which teachers and/or parents can intervene to help improve a child’s social skills and relationship with peers. Please note that the content of each slide should appear in the notes section, while the slide itself should contain the information that would be presented to the teachers and/or parents.
  4. Conclusion slide that clearly explains why the teachers and/or parents should review this material (one to two slides)
  5. Reference slide with at least three scholarly sources and the course text properly cited (one slide). The references should be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.).

The show that I have chosen for this discussion is This Is Us. It’s a very popular television show that tells the store of triplets and their parents. The show bounces back and forth throughout the episodes from the triplets being children, to teens, to adults. It tells their life story and intertwines all phases of their life into a beautiful story that will likely leave you in tears every episode. Two of the triplets are twins and the other is adopted.

For this assignment, I will focus on the relationship between the twins, Kate and Kevin. Their bond is very strong and unique, they are extremely committed to one another with a strong bond of intimacy, making it a compassionate love. (Feenstra, 2013) In the show, the third triplet is a different nationality than the twins and they aren’t quite as connected with him. Perhaps because there’s no “blood” connection, however, it’s a good example of the matching hypothesis, showing that we are more naturally connected with people similar to us. (Feenstra, 2013)

Kevin is a famous movie actor and Kate is a wife and new mom. Kate struggles with her weight and health, and just gave birth to a baby boy who has a disability, while Kevin struggles with addiction and is on a journey of his own trying his best to remain focused on his sobriety. An example of prosocial behavior is in the most recent episode, Kevin gives up a very big movie role/opportunity to stay close to his nephew who is only 4 months old. Wanting to help Kate (and her husband Toby) with his nephew is Kevin’s instrumental goal. His ultimate goal is to remain sober and not get carried away in the “Hollywood” scene and jeopardize his sobriety. Kevin’s goal of staying sober is egoistic because his ultimate goal is to benefit himself and his future to serve more of a purpose in life. (Feenstra, 2013)

Hi Class,

That 70s Show is about a Wisconsin suburban family. The Forman’s, Eric (Son), Laurie (Sister), Red (Father), Kitty (Mother), and various friends of Eric Forman. The Show revolves the life of Eric and his friends. However, the relationship between father and son has a strong presence.

The relationship I chose to interpret is between Red Forman (Father) tells Eric Forman (Son). The factor in attraction is the mere exposure effect. According to Feenstra (2013), is having constant contact or exposure to another person as often as possible (2013). Yes, Red is Eric’s father; they live together and see each other daily. The exposure is inevitable whether this type of exposure is positive or negative depends on the kind of love.

The type of love portrayed between Red and Eric is companionate love. In the text, Feenstra (2013) stated, “Companionate love is characterized by deep caring for another person, comfort and trust, and the enjoyment of shared experiences” (Feenstra, 2103). When watching the show, it seems that Red and Eric’s relationship is more complicated. Red does not outwardly show ‘enjoyment of share experiences’ all the time and mostly indicates disappointment. However, Eric and Red have quick banter, a few shared laughs or dislikes of things, and trust in each other.

Red Forman (Father) tells Eric Forman (Son) that he loves him. The reaction taken by Eric is the result of years of criticism and belittlement given by Red. Red is hard on Eric and has certain expectations for his son; however, he feels that Eric is a dumbass. Not only is there verbal abuse, but there are also looks of disappoints and threats of getting a foot up his ass. In this scenario, Red tells Eric he loves him after Eric brings him the morning newspaper. Eric was utterly confused. When Eric confronted his mother, she was in shock. Red has never told Eric who is 17-years-old that he loved him. Eric contemplated how he would tell his father that he reciprocates the feeling but is unable to express the words. Kitty (Mother) finds out that Red had oral surgery that day and was under the influence of medication. Red had no recollection of the whole day after surgery. When Eric walked in to confess his love, Eric’s mother tried to stop but failed. Eric blurted out that he loved his dad. Red responded in dismay and shouted at Eric to go to his room.

As parents, we love our children. Children are supposed to have a place of trust, intimacy, and caring in a loving home. In the article, Love: What it is, why does it matter, and how does it operate? Expressed “…interactions in which partners are perceived to be responsive to each other’s needs and fulfill attachment-related functions, such as providing a secure base and a safe haven when distress occurs, and are perceived as understanding and valuing of the self” (Reis, T., 2008). Red does love Eric but chooses and aggressive way or for Red a ‘tough love’ strategy to get Eric to be motivated to make something out of life.

For the period of this Show, the Vietnam War has ended, and there were still feelings of hostility between veterans and radicals. Conservatives versus Liberals were high in political debates ‘Make Love, not War’ still holding massive in the news. Red Forman fought for the United States to feel like the next generation is slapping him in the face. When it comes to how easily the younger generation enjoys the freedom that Red and others like him fought to keep.

Red loves Eric through tough love. In the text, Feenstra (2013) explained, “The evolutionary theory suggests we help to promote our genes” (Feenstra, 2013). Red wants Eric not to be a ‘dumbass.’ Red feels that he points out all the stuff he does wrong that Eric would rectify and turn things around.

Kitty wants to encourage a relationship between her husband and son. Kitty feels it’s out of her hands though she tries to push each one to show compassion for each other. However, the 70s were the time of change, and both parents are working. The nuclear family was changing, but people’s attitudes about the dynamics of a family were not evolving as fast as the necessity for duel working households.

ICT

The digital divide remains formidable in scaling information and communication technology (ICT)-enabled opportunities for effective leadership and development in countries lagging behind, (Ahmed, 2015).  Based on the case study, the authors reminded us that, the practice of e-Participation provides an avenue for adaptation, application, and utilization of ICT as a subset of e-Commerce, in the realm of e-Democracy and, it is a concept needed to bridge the existing digital gap within and across countries in a global context.

Q2: From the chapter, we learned that as the world moves at a faster and voluminous pace, there is need to acquire technology and the skill to use it, as is increasing at the rate beyond those societies that are unable to remedy their inadequacies.  However, the challenges to meet this pressure could be enormous, but not insurmountable, and the means to address such challenges are abundantly available in ICT-supported processes like e-Participation.  From this context, what is the functional role of the ICT?

Threats Defense Argument

Due in Week 10 and worth 100 points

The information you provided in your presentation on Threats to the Global Environment has led to productive debates at the UN General Assembly! There are now questions about prioritizing the issues at hand. Some of the countries are challenging your recommendations and questioning your reasons for not including the issues they believe are priority.

From the initial eight global threats, there are four remaining threats that you did not choose in the list of major global issues. Review the list of topics and reflect on two that you did not use in last week’s assignment. Defend your reason for considering these topics lower in priority than the ones in your presentation.

Energy sources

Civil war

Globalization

Poor health of entire populations

Lack of educational opportunities

Cultural taboos

Inappropriate uses of technology

Climate change

The completed version of this assignment will consist of the following:

  1. Select two threats from the list above that you did not use in your Assignment 3a presentation.
  2. Create a minimum two-page document in which you outline a counterargument for the two threats you selected:
  • Write an opening statement describing the perception of each threat.
  • Write one paragraph for each threat (two paragraphs total) in which you give three reasons to explain why the threat is less of a priority to the global environment than the four you selected in Assignment 3a. Support your reasons with at least three credible sources.
  • A conclusion statement for each threat.
  1. Cite at least three credible sources excluding Wikipedia, dictionaries, and encyclopedias for your assessment. A brief list of suggested resources has been provided at the end of the course guide.

The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is:

  • Examine the factors that account for why the growth in the world’s population can negatively affect the global society

3 Part Assignment

Project Overview: For this project, you’ll choose a food or drink item, a cuisine, an invention or an idea,, and then research how four geographic concepts are related to and affect your choice. Instead of presenting your research as a traditional paper, you’ll use PowerPoint or similar presentation software to create a narrated presentation. Your presentation will be structured like a paper, including a title, introduction to the topic, main body, summary and conclusions, and references. Creative use of properly cited graphics and photos from the Internet relevant to your topic is required.

First, choose a food item, cuisine, invention or idea that interests you. Some will have more information available about them than others, so it’s worth doing some investigation before you settle on one. If you’re not sure if your desired topic is appropriate, please feel free to ask!

Once you have selected your topic, you will then do research to see how each of the following geographic concepts affects or is related to your topic: 1. Regions 2. Cultural Landscape 3. Diffusion 4. Distance decay The first three concepts are well covered in your textbook. Distance decay refers to the fact that influence and interaction between locations decreases as the distance between them increases. As such, it has a significant influence on how things change as they diffuse away from their point of origin. Be sure to address these specific geographic terms and concepts. You don’t need to address them in this order, but you do need to address all of them. You may use “subsets” of these definitions (e.g. contagious diffusion) if such subsets exist. Be sure to refer to your text and other reliable resources to ensure you completely understand these concepts. You should be detailed in your treatment of these concepts – for instance, you should explain both how and why your choice varies by region, and how and why it has been affected by distance decay. Remember that geography, as an academic discipline, seeks to explain why things vary from place to place, not just describe how they do.

You will complete this project in 3 separate assignments: an annotated bibliography, an outline, and your final presentation.

PART 1: An annotated bibliography

Assignment Objective: Assess sources for your research for your final presentation (for credibility, reliability, and relevance) and list references in proper APA format through the creation of an annotated bibliography.

Assignment Instructions: An annotation is a summary and evaluation, and your annotated bibliography will include a summary and evaluation of some of the sources (or references) you will use for your presentation.

To prepare for this assignment, I recommend that you do the following:

Read these directions carefully.

Review the sample annotated bibliography provided to you below.

Read the grading criteria below. The grading criteria is a detailed evaluation that I will use to assess your performance. It also will help you understand what is expected you as you prepare your assignment.

Message me with any questions!

The reason the annotated bibliography is included as part of the research project is that writing an annotated bibliography provides excellent preparation for the final presentation. One of the issues regarding any type of research is the credibility of the sources used, particularly those obtained from various websites. By forcing you to evaluate your potential sources carefully, the annotated bibliography helps you determine if the sources you chose are credible and relevant to your topic. It will also help you understand the topic better, which will help you develop your presentation.

For this project, you will assess three sources to include:

1) a complete citation for each source,

2) a summary of each source, and

3) an evaluation of each source.

Three sources are required for this assignment (i.e., you are to write an annotation for each source). However, you must use five or more sources in your final presentation.

Use the TEMPLATE below to summarize and evaluate each of your three sources.

Citation:

Written in APA reference list format. For more help with formatting, see APA handout.

Summary:

What is the purpose of the source, review article, original research? What topics are covered? This section is generally 3-5 sentences that summarize the author’s main point. For more help, see this link on paraphrasing sources.

Evaluation:

After summarizing the article (or research paper or book), it is necessary to evaluate it and state where you found it – its source (e.g.,journal, website, etc.). Briefly answer the following questions in 3-5 sentences:

What is the format or type of source (e.g., peer-reviewed journal paper, website, book)? How reliable is the information in the article, and how credible is the source (e.g., website’s sponsoring organization, journal or book publisher) and the author(s)?

You must submit your Annotated Bibliography as a “Microsoft Word” document using the template provided (rather than a Word Pad, Works, etc. document).

PART 2: Outline

Assignment Objective: Organize your thoughts and the main points of your research for your final presentation in outline format.

Assignment Instructions:  To help you complete Assignment 3: The Presentation, you will first submit an outline to organize your thoughts and main points. Your outline should be formatted a specific way and must contain the following elements as described below.

To prepare for this assignment, I recommend that you do the following:

Read these directions carefully.

Read the grading criteria below. The grading criteria is a detailed evaluation that I will use to assess your performance. It also will help you understand what is expected of you as you prepare your assignment.

Message me with any questions!

Be sure to add your name to your outline.

The outline format: Your outline must be formatted as described. Please note that this format will be assessed in your grade:

Use an alphanumeric sequence

Sections should be indented and aligned

Follow the suggested order of the required elements

Use brief but detailed and descriptive phrases.

The required elements: Your outline should contain the following elements in this order:

I. The Introduction: This section previews your topic and the details you will cover in the body of your presentation. It should be very brief, but include:

A. The food, cuisine, invention or idea that you are going to discuss.

B. Why you chose this topic.

C. A preview of the regions where your topic has developed and then diffused to.

II. The Body (Content Sections): In the body, you must address how the four geographic concepts mentioned in the presentation instructions (regions, cultural landscapes, diffusion, and distance decay) relate to your topic.

A. Regions: Discuss the origin region or regions of your topic, with specific attention to the geographic qualities of the region that influenced the development of your topic.

B. Cultural Landscape: Discuss how the landscape in the region(s) described above have been shaped by the culture that gave rise to your topic, and how your topic might be reflected in that landscape.

C. Diffusion: Discuss how your topic has diffused from its origin. Where has it diffused to? What factors led to its diffusion there? What kind of diffusion has it experienced?

D. Distance Decay: Discuss how your topic has changed as it has diffused away from the region(s) of its origin. Explain these changes with reference to the geographic qualities of the regions it has diffused to.

III. The Conclusion Section: this section should contain four to six points that sum up the main points from the body of the outline.

Start your conclusion with one sentence summarizing some basic information about your topic.

Continue with a brief summary (1-2 sentences) about the important characteristics of its origin region(s).

Include a brief note about relevant cultural landscapes.

Include a brief summary (1-2 sentences) about the diffusion of your topic and the distance decay it experienced.

Wrap up the conclusion section with a closing note that provides brief information about why this topic was of interest to you, and a fact about your topic you found interesting.

IV. Reference section: This is not just the reference page; rather, referencing should occur throughout the outline as it will in your presentation. Therefore, your outline should include both a separate reference page containing a minimum of five sources listed in proper APA reference list format AND internal citations throughout the outline where appropriate. Please be sure to see the resources below for assistance regarding in-text citations and reference list formatting, and/or ask me if you have any additional questions.

Please make note of the following tips and tricks:

I understand that this is a rough draft and, as your research and writing continue over the next few weeks, details may be added or changed. Although you do not have to resubmit it to me, I recommend that you update this outline to help you best complete the Final Presentation.

Write your outline so that it has detailed bullets that you can easily then flesh out into sentences for the narration of your Final Presentation.

After your outline is complete, I recommend that you next draft your introductory and conclusion sections for your presentation. This will ensure that all the main points of the outline are incorporated in these two framing sections of your final presentation.
