Follow the following directions to access and watch the video “Taboo: Marks of Identity”.

1. From MDC’s main web page, go to “Academics” and select “Learning Resources“.

2. Select “Databases”.

3. Your “Borrower ID” is your MDC Student ID#. Your password is the last four digits of your student ID.

4. Select “Alphabetical”.

5. Scroll down and select the database, “Films on Demand“.

6. Type in the database search bar “Taboo: Marks of Identity”.

Let’s face it. We are judged on looks. In general, people like to say otherwise. People tend to say that “It’s the inside that counts”. While there may be truth to that statement, it doesn’t take away from the fact that physical appearances matter to us all. If it didn’t, we would never go to the gym or wear certain outfits. Watch the video, “Marks of Identity”. Out of all of the mini-episodes you watched, which one was the most different? Could you identify with any of the practices shown or were they too extreme for you? Do you know someone whose personal choices and how they choose to mark their body makes them an outcast? Explain your reaction to the video and answer the questions thoroughly.

That video was a little hard to watch. I couldn’t imagine going through the pain that some people go through to mark or modify their bodies. The one I felt was most extreme was the neck coils and also getting third degree burns to mark your body. I felt like those two things where very extreme. I could not believe the damage they were doing to their bodies by pushing their shoulders down and squishing their ribs together. Also, the people that mark their bodies with third degree burns, that is insane. They can catch infections and die or lose the part of the body. Most things in this video were a little extreme. The only thing I can relate to is people with tattoos. I personally do not have any because I am terrified of needles but some people look really good with them and get meaningful designs as well. I have many friends that have tattoos on their bodies and they definitely look like an outcast but their personality is like anyone else’s. I do not judge the book by its cover. To end this, my reaction to this video is that I was chocked.

The most different in my opinion was the Paduang tradition because it’s the most foreign. The process of the brass collar seems very harsh; considering the fact that it would leave bruises on the neck of the females.I don’t know anyone that has strange markings on their bodies to the point it makes them an outcast. I was very shocked when I saw this video because it showed how far people are willing to go express themselves or to be attractive. For instance, in the paduang tradion video, the narrator stated that women put the rings around their neck because it is their tradition and to attract the men in the tribe.

Taboo Delicacies

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAfGAk1n8cI

Watch the above video by National Geographic.  It can be shocking and even overwhelming to think of anything different than your own culture. In many parts of the world, rats are seen as a nuisance but worshiped in others. For those who practice Hinduism, cows are sacred and deeply respected. The way we view food can give others an insight into how we view culture.

As you watched how different parts of the world interact and celebrate food, what came to your mind? Can you relate with any practice that was shown? What are your own cultural practices that you engage in that others may or may not understand? How does culture influence our interpersonal relationships and how we communicate with those around us?  The professors in the video explained that we are not as different from others and food is a part of celebration for a multitude of cultures. Do you agree with them? Explain your answer.

Your Discussion Forum assignments will be graded using the following grading criteria:

As I watched how different parts of the world interact and celebrate food, the first thing that came to mind was a sense of repulsion and disgust because of what they were eating. I definitely can’t relate to any of the practices that were shown. Since I am cuban, my own cultural practices are mainly eating white rice, black beans and roast pork for Christmas Eve and now that I live in the US, I try to engage in the culture here by eating turkey and mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving day. Culture influences or interpersonal relationships and how we communicate with those around us because we are not all from the same country or region, therefore we all like different foods, music, sports etc. The communication between people with different cultures can be either positive if they respect and try to learn from each other, or negative if they both think they culture is the better one and start attacking each other. I do agree with the professors saying we are not as different from others and food is a part of celebration for a multitude of cultures because all the cultures have the same principles which is what makes a culture a “culture” being a particular food, music or clothing.

Unthinkable Delicacies:The first thing that strikes a chord when I saw this video is, decent variety. The world is colossal and there numerous things that we are not by any means mindful off. Assorted variety with respect to nourishment, language, music, art, qualities, propensities, such a significant number of things that makes each and every individual in this world interesting. I for one don’t identify with any of the practices that was appeared in this video since I practice religion all alone. I don’t relate to any gathering or any association, I put stock in things and I simply connect to them in my very own one of a kind way and my everyday life style.

Discussion 1

Assignment: Steps of Addictions Assessment Processes

Addiction may take many forms. A person may be addicted to a substance, such as cocaine, or a behavior, such as gambling. Individuals who enter into addictions assessment generally have exhibited certain hallmarks of addiction, such as an increase in the behavior, problems in relationships and life functioning, and withdrawal symptoms upon ceasing the behavior.

Someone with a potential addiction may be facing a host of issues. He or she might require medical and/or legal help. A teenager may be a minor requiring parental consent for any treatment and might already be receiving help from a guidance counselor or school psychologist. It is true that individual assessments have unique features and should be tailored to the needs of and aspects related to each individual being assessed. However, there are important steps common to most assessments that allow addictions professionals to gather reliable, valid, and relevant information about the clients they serve, as well as to enlist the best set of professionals to form the multidisciplinary team.

This week, you describe the steps of a standard addictions assessment and reflect on the importance of using a multidisciplinary team.

To prepare:

Review the Learning Resources, including the following:

Perkinson, R. R. (2017). Chemical dependency counseling: A practical guide (5th ed.). Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage.

  • Chapter 1, “The First Contact”
  • Chapter 14, “The Clinical Staff”

Submit a 2 page paper that includes the following:

  • The steps of an addictions assessment
  • An explanation of why each step is important
  • One example of a multidisciplinary team and the contribution each of the team members might make to the assessment

Educational Terminology

As a teacher, you will encounter a variety of lesson planning   templates and formats, each with unique terminology. Understanding   educational terms and acronyms is critical to being successful in the   education profession. This assignment will familiarize you with these   important terms and lesson plan formats.

Part 1: Understanding Educational Terminology

For this assignment, review the educational terminology included in   the “Understanding Educational Terminology” template. For   each term in the template, include the following based on the   resources in the topic materials and any additional resources you find   in the GCU Library:

  • A brief explanation/definition for each educational term      in your own words.
  • One example for each term’s     purpose in the planning, instruction, and assessment process.

Part 2: Examining Different Lesson Plan Formats

For the majority of your program, you will use the “COE Lesson   Plan Template” for assignments. Review the “COE Lesson Plan   Template” and the “Additional Lesson Plan Template.”

In a 250-500 word analysis, compare the “COE Lesson Plan   Template” with one other format. In your comparison, address the following:

  • What core lesson planning components  are in both   templates?
  • What are at least two similarities and two     differences in the terminology between the formats?
  • What     are at least two similarities and two differences in the     organization between the formats?

Values Statement and Reflection

As you embark on the process of becoming an effective program administrator of a high-quality early care and education program, think about the experiences, role models, or mentors that have brought you to this point in your career. Watch this three-minute video on Developing Personal Values to help shape your focus for this assignment. Prior to beginning this assignment, identify a program which over the duration of this course will serve as a model for your final project. After reviewing your selected program’s core values, this week’s reading, and textbook Figure 2.3,

  • Create a personal core values statement. This statement should serve as a framework for the potential creation of both a vision and mission statement (which are considered concise descriptions of what, who, how, and why a program serves its community). For this assignment, you will submit only your core value statement addressing the following:
    • What makes an effective leader?
    • Why do you want to be a program administrator?
