CM is a thirty-two-year old African American female who reports being diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder. CM reports at this time she was displaying feeling of hopelessness and worthlessness, which was affecting her ability to perform daily living skills and parenting duties. CM reports a history of suicidal ideations, but currently denies any suicidal or homicidal ideations. CM reports receiving mental health services in the past but has not received services in three years due to losing her insurance. CM’s description of her past mental health symptoms; which include depression, mania, anxiety, panic attacks, irritability, poor sleep/appetite, isolation, low energy, and impaired memory. CM reports a history of medication noncompliance. CM stated that she often needs help remembering to take her medication. CM reports displaying depressive symptoms 3 to 4 times a week. CM states that she will isolate herself and have a decline in appetite. CM admits she often loses motivation to leave the house, attend appointments, and take care of necessary business. CM stated she sleeps all day and is up all night. She reports becoming hyperactive at night. CM expressed that a majority of her symptoms are triggered by stress. CM stated, “I stress over minor stuff’. CM identified her children as additional stressors that trigger her panic attacks. CM reports both children have ADHD, and due to her own mental health issues, she has difficulty parenting them. CM stated, “I have to cover up my problems when they come around. I don’t feel strong enough to take care of them”. She stated when having a panic attacks her chest will become tight and she can breathe. CM reports no physical health problems. CM reports she lacks motivation to cook and clean when feeling depressed. CM admits to having poor money management skills, which is an additional stressor. CM reports waiting for cutoff notices before paying bills.  CM reports being physically and verbally abused by her mother between the ages of six to twelve years old. CM stated her mother has schizophrenia, and during that time it was not being managed.  At the age of thirteen, her father received custody and she was sent to live with her paternal grandmother. CM stated that she began smoking marijuana at the age of fifteen as a coping mechanism. CM continues to smoke marijuana, and reports smoking daily due to not having her psychotropic medications.

Discussion: Designing Qualitative Research

Typically, when speaking of validity, qualitative researchers are referring to research that is credible and trustworthy, i.e., the extent to which one can have confidence in the study’s findings (Lincoln & Guba, 1985). Generalizability, a marker of reliability, is typically not a main purpose of qualitative research because the researcher rarely selects a random sample with a goal to generalize to a population or to other settings and groups. Rather, a qualitative researcher’s goal is often to understand a unique event or a purposively selected group of individuals. Therefore, when speaking of reliability, qualitative researchers are typically referring to research that is consistent or dependable (Lincoln & Guba, 1985), i.e., the extent to which the findings of the study are consistent with the data that was collected.

For this Discussion, you will explain criteria for evaluating the quality of qualitative research and consider the connection of such criteria to philosophical orientations. You will also consider the ethical implications of designing qualitative research.

With these thoughts in mind:

An explanation of two criteria for evaluating the quality of qualitative research designs. Next, explain how these criteria are tied to epistemological and ontological assumptions underlying philosophical orientations and the standards of your discipline. Then, identify a potential ethical issue in qualitative research and explain how it might influence design decisions. Finally, explain what it means for a research topic to be amenable to scientific study using a qualitative approach.

Should we legalize Marijuana?  (issue)

My opinion is that the USA should at least decriminalize recreational marijuana use. (conclusion)

My reasons:

1. Prohibition does not seem to work. Millions smoke marijuana regularly, creating an impression in the youth that breaking the law is OK if one thinks the law is stupid since ‘everyone’ is doing it. Any teenager in any big city can buy marijuana if he or she wants to within a couple of hours of deciding to do it.
2. The illegal sales of marijuana sustain a network of criminal enterprises, leading to murderous turf wars.
3. The illegal sales of marijuana provide profit for traffickers, but its legalization would provide a (huge?) windfall in taxes and save even more on policing and persecuting its use.
4. Prisons are full of people whose only crime was to possess marijuana. They are treated like any other criminals at an enormous cost to us, themselves, and their families, even though they represent no real danger to society.
5. Marijuana is a mild hallucinogen and hallucinogens are chemically not addictive as opposed to many legal substances like caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, certain foods, and many prescription drugs and only prescription drugs are regulated and restricted, the rest is unregulated.
6. Marijuana is not really dangerous and it is highly hypocritical to keep marijuana illegal while other ‘vices’ are legal and taxed. Smoking, drinking, and obesity altogether kill almost 800, 000 people each year in the US, while the opponents of marijuana failed to prove even a single death related to it since its regulation and restriction started nearly 150 years ago. 150 years should have been enough time to prove its allegedly horrific dangers.

Considering/refuting opposing arguments:

1. One argument is that marijuana use is unhealthy. It is true that no substance abuse can be considered healthy; marijuana is not as harmful as its opponents claim it is. On the government’s anti-drug websites, there is no data (no numbers or statistics) whatsoever, stating that it causes lung damage, brain damage, or severe psychological disorders, only that it contains harmful substances.
2. Anti-marijuana websites are full of innuendo & propaganda but short on facts, and many of them are unreliable. Anyone can set up a website under a scientific-sounding name and rite things without proof.
3. There are claims that marijuana legalization would send the wrong message that it is OK to use it, but it is a weak argument and although there may be some truth in it, most young people do not believe that it is harmful anyway.
4. One of the most frequent claims is that marijuana is a ‘gateway drug.’ Its opponents point out that most users of heavy drugs ‘started’ with marijuana and it is true, but they have never shown that it was marijuana that lead those users to other drugs and not their own tendency of drug-seeking lead them through the most readily available drugs (marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco) on their way to heavy drug use. The vast majority of marijuana users never cross over to heavy drugs.

Clinical Field Experience

The manner in which a teacher responds to a student’s challenging behavior can result in positive and negative outcomes. Often students have been conditioned that by engaging in certain behaviors their needs or wants will be met, thus making the challenging behavior an adaptive behavior. Teachers need to be aware of how they respond to challenging behavior to avoid inadvertently reinforcing the challenging behavior. However, by teaching and positively reinforcing replacement behaviors, students will learn to engage in more appropriate behaviors to get what they want and need.

 

Coordinate with a certified special education teacher to work with a student or small group of students who have behavior plans in place. Teach an activity of your mentor teacher’s choice to the students and observe the following:

  1. Setting: What is the setting like surrounding where the students are participating in the activity?
  2. Interventions/Plans: What are the interventions, replacement behaviors, and/or goals in place for the students?
  3. Crisis Plan in place by mentor/district: Refer to Topic 6 assignment. What plans are in place to ensure students’ safety?
  4. Activity: What is the activity you are facilitating? How does it support the behavior needs of the students? If it does not fully support the student behavior needs, how could it be adapted?
  5. General behavior during activity: How did the students engage with the activity, you (as the teacher), and any other students?
  6. Misbehavior or disruptive behavior: Did the students display any misbehavior or disruptive behavior? Why do you think they did or did not behave appropriately? Or, if they behaved appropriately, what do you feel contributed to them following the expectations without misbehavior?

Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.

IDEA requires that special education students be provided a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE). Special education teachers are among of the decision makers who identify what is the most appropriate, least restrictive educational environment for each student for whom an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed. It is important that special education teachers be aware of the benefits and restrictions of each type of placement setting and know how to provide an individualized, effective education for students with disabilities.

Part 1: Graphic Organizer
